Manufacturing Day – 2018

Blog

JB Cutting opened its doors once again for Manufacturing Day 2018.  The theme of this year’s event was #gearupforMFGDAY.  Students took home a gear that we manufactured out of 1/4″ raw mdf and pressed as a reminder of the day along with other fun swag.

Manufacturing Day is an annual event, held the 1st Friday in October, during which North American manufacturers showcase the potential of modern manufacturing and foster interest in manufacturing.  Highly trained, well-paid employees who work on state-of-the-art equipment are the norm in today’s manufacturing environment.  Gone are the days of antiquated factories designed for low-skilled workers.

To kick off the tour, students viewed a short presentation about our manufacturing work-flow before walking through the process step-by-step.  Students learned about the types of jobs available, met the actual machine operators, and found out about the educational pathways that lead to a good job in manufacturing.  Here are some pics from this year’s event.  A huge thank you to our tour guides:

  • Jason Ferrence
  • Paul Leone
  • Robert Skeltis
  • Lucas Liberty

Your participation in inspiring the next generation of manufacturers is very important and each of you added something special to make the tour really stand out from previous years.

Special guest State Rep Bill Sowerby also attended our event and gave a short, inspiring speech to the students at the end of the tour.  We were honored he chose to stop by!

Manufacturing Day is not limited to the Detroit area, it is a nationwide event.  Why not host your own event next year?

  • More students need to be exposed to careers in this field
  • Highlight career opportunities
  • Inspire the future workforce to take the place of retiring baby boomers

If you’re in the interested in hosting your own event, here is a helpful webinar detailing 3 company’s experiences (JBC included) sponsored by AWFS (Association of Woodworking & Furnishing Suppliers).
